This is a key role in design with responsibility for the delivery of innovative and cost effective design and test solutions, on time and on budget, which meet or exceed customer requirements.

Responsibilities:

Establish/negotiate and fully document clear technical requirements through liaison with internal and external stakeholders
Actively participate in the planning and resource estimation of design and testing activities for new projects
Identify from the pre-bid stage, a clear plan for compliance with every aspect of customer requirements, capturing associated costs and timescales
Liaise throughout the project with customers and suppliers as required
Proactively alert peers, and management of any project risks and potential mitigation actions
Create design concepts, schematics and associated specifications, review packs and validation strategies
Ensure all design changes are fully documented, approved, correctly released and appropriately stored/archived
Conduct peer reviews and support formal design reviews
Carry out electronics cooling simulation modelling (training provided where necessary)
Participate in DFMEA design failure mode effects & analysis reviews
Work closely with production engineers to ensure design is optimised for manufacture
Ensure that all design work is cost optimised in accordance with product bom cost targets and development labour budget
Identify all product testing requirements needed throughout development and in manufacturing
Identify most cost effective hardware equipment to support tight specification and accuracy levels and help develop software solutions for testing. This also includes creating cost justifications for any capital investment
Develop detailed validation testing procedures ensuring that all customer requirements are fully met with evidence
Prepare test specifications for any sub contract testing; clearly articulate options and recommendations
Work closely with other designers and manufacturing leads to identify test solutions that provide optimal coverage in minimal cycle times at the lowest possible cost
Responsible for ordering all parts with purchasing and conducting the assembly and validation of all test equipment solutions.
Carry out verification and validation testing, and support factory acceptance testing
Identify and implement opportunities to improve design process robustness/efficiency
Be on hand in Production during prototype builds to ensure that any build or testing issues are swiftly resolved
Proactively alert management of any potential cost/time savings (or overruns) that may impact project margin. Ensure lessons learned are captured and appliedSkills/Experience:

Electronics related degree/HND – significant demonstrable experience may be considered in lieu
Proficient in the design of innovative, high-reliability, power-efficient electronic circuits for use in demanding environments
In depth understanding of the principles of designing for success in EMC testing
Experience of working with various micro controllers and micro code
Experience of designing circuits with JTAG interfaces
Experience of electronics packaging design
Able to identify and assess power/battery solutions for demanding environments
Able to estimate work effort with reasonable accuracy, and finish on time without close supervision
Pro-active problem solver and out-of-box thinker
Attention to detail and a ‘right first time’ approach
Carry out any other duties that might reasonably be requestedWillingness and desire to acquire new skills and invest in professional self-development
Excellent communications skills with proven ability to engage and build strong working relationships in a team environmentAny of the following would be deemed as highly desirable:

Experience of electronics cooling simulation software
Knowledge/experience of designing Intrinsically Safe circuits
Knowledge or experience of LabView
Practical exposure to software programming
Experience of working with C++ and C for microcontrollers
Knowledge or proven ability to interpret defence standards
Experience in a fast-paced Aerospace or Defence Quality manufacturing environmentPLEASE NOTE:
